Allocate Software today announced the launch of a Workforce Improvement Programme focused on NHS acute trusts that uses the data driven intelligence from Allocate-Insight and the new eRostering Maturity Index (eRMI) score to identify areas for improvement and opportunities for greater productivity gains. The programme will commence with a Rapid 90-day Improvement Collaborative that will be made available to 20 trusts to help them better understand their workforce data and focus on some of the practical and accessible changes that can be made from ward to board to ensure savings are unlocked while safety is safe guarded.

More widely, the programme will focus on effective local use of the new care hours per patient day (CHPPD) metric, as well as working jointly with trusts to ensure safe, productive deployment of the workforce across all staff groups and in all settings including community and mental health.

The Workforce Improvement Programme will be led by Lyn McIntyre MBE who has joined Allocate Software as National Workforce Productivity and Safety Advisor. Lyn comes directly from the Efficiency and Productivity team at the Department of Health where she led the Workforce Efficiency Improvement Collaborative and most recently developed guidance on effective e-Rostering published by NHS Improvement.

The Carter report identified that effective eRostering and job planning could save the NHS in England £2 billion across all staff (medics, nurses and AHPs). The Secretary of State for Health reiterated its importance in his speech at NHS Confederation annual conference where he said: “Organisations have the technology, they now need to use it.” He went on to cite Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trusts as examples of organisations that are rostering effectively and as a consequence reducing agency spend.

Each of these organisations uses Allocate HealthRoster and the Workforce Improvement Programme aims to spread good practice that Allocate Software sees amongst its customers more widely. Lyn McIntyre led the implementation of HealthRoster at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2007 and has maintained that link to this present day, developing systems that triangulate staffing with patient safety outcomes.

Hugh Ashley, UK General Manager, Allocate Software, said: “Good eRostering is the first line of defence against the spiralling agency bill. We can see the impact good rostering is having across our customers. I believe the Workforce Improvement Programme under Lyn’s leadership will help trusts make the most of their investment, accelerate good eRostering for more organisations and keep the agencies in check as they find new and creative ways to try and manage the supply of staff.”

Lyn McIntyre said: “I am delighted to be asked to lead Allocate Software’s Workforce Improvement Programme. I have first-hand experience of Allocate Software’s commitment to helping trusts succeed in reducing unwarranted variation. By joining Allocate Software I have the opportunity to share the good practice and help organisations deliver the savings and safety benefits identified in the Carter report.”
